These 5 Red-Hot Christmas Decorating Trends Are Coming to Town in 2024

Christmas decor trends, in their own way, reflect the zeitgeist. Take the 19th century, for example: Thanks to an obsession with gold finishes and opulent decorations, Victorian Christmas trees were often adorned with gilded acorns and crystal-encrusted holly. A century later, in the 1940s, decorators went wild with tinsel, creating a metallic moment we’ll never forget. Next came kitschy leg lamps, Hallmark ornaments, and, more recently, a decidedly understated elegance that leans toward quiet luxury.

But by 2024, homeowners are ready to give their homes a holiday moment that’s anything but quiet. At least that’s what we suspect after speaking with designers, trend forecasters, and retail experts who know exactly what’s trending in the realm of holiday decor this year. From mirrored ball Christmas ornaments to lots of ribbon to funky neon-hued tableware, we’re clearly ready for a season of unfettered happiness.

Diptyque’s 2024 collection features the felt creations of British artisan Lucy Sparrow.
Maybe it’s because they’ve built a cult community of Etsy artisans; maybe it’s because they’ve turned to arts and crafts; or maybe it’s just because people love felt animal decorations as much as they love puppies—felt animal decorations are exploding online. Whether it’s a curious-looking porcupine, a super furry sheep, or an inexplicably adorable mouse on skis, these needle-felted specimens replace standard balls with impressive durability. “Our felt animals always sell well,” says Beth Smith, general manager of Terrain, noting that her bouncy critters nearly sold out last year. “They’re an easy, family-friendly way to add a festive touch to a mantel, table centerpiece, or Christmas tree.”

For Etsy’s Isom Johnson, “This holiday season, shoppers are looking for a deeper connection with nature and celebrating the simplicity of nature indoors, with searches for folk costumes, in particular, up 19% in the last three months compared to last year.” Noting that this interest is sure to spill over into the decorating world this season. “Etsy’s Mythical Medieval and Nature Reborn trends draw on the escapism of magical worlds and the comfort of nature, a perfect marriage for shoppers to experience both the animal and festive folk aesthetics,” she added.
